sushi lunch at tsumura

In eating in manila on June 26, 2009 at 5:05 pm

had a very pleasant lunch today. my boss offered to treat to japanese and, after having had a fairly hefty burger yesterday, i thought sushi would be nice. my boss’s favorite nearby japanese place is tsumura which is on the 2nd floor of the corporate 88 building along sedeno cor valero in makati. the place is on the upscale side – very nice ambience. when i got the menu, i instantly went to the sushi selection and ordered this

DSC00013this is their “beginner’s sushi.” the meal comes with miso soup, a small saucer of pickles and a small dish of fruit for dessert. at P350 in an upscale restaurant, not so bad. given my earlier post about looking for good tendon, i was tempted to order that here, but since it was a free lunch i felt a little embarrassed to do that and ordered the cheaper option hehe. plus, i was really in the mood for sushi.

the big difference i detect instantly between this and other less pricey sushis is that the rice is less vinegared. which is good. allows the rest of the tastes to come through making for a more flavorful, balanced, and delicate dish. the shrimp is also palpably fresher and the calfornia maki again has a better balance of ingredients – being not just crabstick and mayo.

but for me, the star of this meal was dessert. when the fruits came, it was, sadly, just a slice of pineapple and a slice of watermelon. so we hit the menus again and i ordered sesame ice cream

DSC00017even if it is a brownish gray, this stuff is delicious. it has a perfect blend of sweet and toasty and is certainly the sort of dessert that will make you go “mmmmmm!” my only beef was that it was a little on the icy side. what happens to ice cream when it melts and is refrozen. so i’d love to try this when it’s newly made. because even with that texture, i was scraping it off the dish. a must try in my opinion
